San Pedro (Spanish for 'Saint Peter') is a neighborhood in the South Bay and Harbor region of Los Angeles, California. Once a separate city, it consolidated with Los Angeles in 1909. The Port of Los Angeles, a major seaport, is partially located within San Pedro. The district evolved from a fishing industry hub to a diverse community.

The area was originally inhabited by the Tongva people, who used plank canoes for travel. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo made first European contact in 1542. San Pedro was named for St. Peter of Alexandria by Cabrillo.

Manuel Domínguez helped establish the area. Rancho San Pedro was granted in 1784 under Spanish rule. When Mexico gained independence, trade restrictions lifted, boosting the town. After the Mexican-American War, San Pedro's harbor expanded under Phineas Banning.

In 1906, Harbor Gateway was annexed, and in 1909, Wilmington and San Pedro joined Los Angeles. In 1929, the Sunken City Disaster occurred when an earthquake caused homes to slide into the sea.
